THOL BIRD SANCTUARY, near Thol village in Kalol, Mehsana, is still surprisingly underrated tourist spot in Gujarat. Where tourist prefer going to Nalsarovar due to its popularity, this sanctuary is still struggling behind, leaving it calm & beautiful. Pick a date between November to January, to witness the scenic beauty of colorful and vivid flora and fauna. The Migratory birds -Great white pelicans, Flamingos, Geese, Sarus Crane and many more, fly thousands of miles from different countries due to food scarcity, making the lake arresting.
Astonishingly this is an artificial lake, which was built by the Ruler of Baroda, Sayajirao Gayakvad in 1912. Basically, the lake was made as an irrigation tank with water storage capacity. Later in 1988 it was declared as Thol Bird Sanctuary. In addition, the Thol Sanctuary is proposed to be declared as an Eco-Sensitive Zone conforming to the Environment Protection Act 1986. The draft of the proposed is been already prepared for further process.
THOL BIRD SANCTUARY HABITATS
This inland wetland in the semi arid zone of Kalol is surrounded by crop, fallow and scrub. Surprisingly the artificial lake is having catchment area of 15,500 hectors(38,000 acres). Habitats like Bluebull (Boselaphus tragocamelus), striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), wolf (Canis lupus), golden jackal (Canis aureus) and blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) are found here.
The Thol Bird Sanctuary is a treat to all the bird and nature lover who truly loves to explore the treasures of nature. You will find more than 100 species including Egrets, Goose, Spoonbills, Ducks, Cranes, Geese and the list goes on. Take a taste of bird watching in the cold winters and get close to nature.
