This ferocious rape case of Sonipat is a resemblance of the Nirbhaya Case which took place in Delhi that had had shook the nation with wide outrage.

A month back, the victim’s family had approached the Sonipat police regarding their daughter getting harassed by Sumit, the main accused. The complaint was though registered but no actions were taken against it. The plea went unanswered.

Denying the fact, Sonipat Superintendent of Police, Ashwin Shenvi said, “There was a verbal complaint given some time back by the woman to Sonipat police saying that the main accused was asking her to marry him. It was a verbal complaint, there was no written complaint to police station”.

“However, later the complainant and her mother again came to the police station and said they had struck a compromise, and there no need for police action,” the police officer.

The victim is said to belong from a Dalit community and therefore the  accused is been booked under the provision of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

He added “The woman was a Dalit and out of the two accused, main accused Sumit is also a Dalit,” he added.

Shenvi said when the rape case came in front, the investigation found out involvement of two people. The two accused were then arrested.

The family of the victim gave the names of the six people involved according to them, said the Navdeep Virk,  Rohtak Range Inspector General of Police.

“The victim’s family gave names of six more persons yesterday, suspecting their involvement in the crime. A supplementary statement of the family has been recorded to find out if those who have been named are actually involved. Out of these six persons, five are relatives of Sumit, main accused. One more is also related in some way to the accused,” the SP said.

The police has later arrested two accused, one the main 24 years old Sumit and another 28 years old Vikas. They are arrested on the charges of abduction, rape and murder. Sumit works at a private job while, Vikas works as a car mechanic.

The victim’s family has asked for similar punishment which was given to the culprits involved in the Nirbhaya Case.

As a matter of fact, the BJP- led Haryana Government had recently launched a program called “Operation Durga” to stop harassment and eve-teasing in the public places. It has not been a month and this shocking incident has shook the nation.

The victim’s parents had lodged a missing complaint at the Sonipat police station. The victim is said to be a divorcee who was abducted on 9 May 2017 from Sonipat. The police said that she was abducted in a car.

Sumit, the main accused in the rape case, was pressurising the victim to marry him, said the police.
Ajay Malik, Sub-Inspector at Sonipat Police said that the victim was first raped and later her face was hit and smashed by a brick. Later, her body was identified by her mother by identifying her cloths.

“He was putting pressure on her to marry him and used to threaten her. A week ago, he stopped her when she was returning from work. When she resisted, he threatened and abused her. She slapped him and ran home,” said the mother in her statement to the police.
